Holy Wells are an intrinsic part of our collective memory in Ireland and are an interwoven story of the traditions and rituals of both the pre-Christian and Christian belief systems.
The holy wells are considered sacred and were places where pilgrims went to give thanks, leave offerings and ask for help and cures on physical, emotional
and spiritual levels. Ireland has the highest number of recorded holy wells in the world and the tradition of visiting these special and sacred places continues to this day.
There are approximately 120 recorded holy wells in Co. Wicklow and about 30 are public access.
This is the annual pattern day walk to Lady's Well Ballymanus Upper on Carrick Mountain. The route from Moneystown to the well and back to Moneystown is 9kms in total.
Lady's Well is a very ancient well site marked on the Neville Maps of 1760 and was rediscovered in 2013.There has been a walk since then.
There will be a short talk on the history and traditions of the well and the local area with music and poetry. Refreshments afterwards in Moneystown Hall.
A reasonable level of fitness required for the walk.
